Inside every healthy tooth is the pulp chamber, which consists of nerves, blood and lymph vessels. If a large piece of the tooth is broken, or there is a deep cavity, bacteria can penetrate the pulp. This leads to a – often very painful – inflammation destroying the pulp tissue. If bacteria penetrate the tooth even further, a purulent inflammation can develop at the tip of the root, which results in a destruction of the surrounding jawbone.
Root canal treatment – also called endodontic treatment – is the only way to save your diseased tooth. The tooth is cleaned from the inside by removing the infected tissue and eliminating any bacteria. Finally, the root canal is filled tightly to prevent further bacteria from entering.
The only alternative to a root canal treatment is the removal of the infected tooth. However, the loss of a tooth always interferes considerably with your quality of life and a prosthetic restoration or implant will be necessary to replace the missing tooth.
The success of a root canal treatment is never 100% guaranteed, but by using a high resolution microscope we can treat root canals much more precisely.
